CUSTOMER IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT
OPENING A NEW ACCOUNT

To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.

What this means for you: When you request to open an account, we will ask for your full name including middle name, your physical address, date of birth, social security number or tax identification number, or other information that will allow us to identify you. We will require a photo identification issued by a government agency, which would typically be your driver’s license, or Tennessee issued identification card.

First Community CU will also obtain a credit report prior to opening an account for you. Based on your credit rating, First Community CU may not offer you all of our services and products or may deny your account request. If you do not wish for First Community CU to obtain a credit rating, we will not be able to open an account for you.

Once a Member, Always a Member

The charter provides that a member of the First Community Credit Union is always a member as long as membership is maintained by keeping at least five dollars ($5) on deposit. This applies even if you change employment.

What is a Credit Union?

A credit union is not a bank; it is not a labor union, nor a loan company. It is not a credit bureau. It is not a business in the usual sense, as it does not have stockholders who demand a profit. It differs from other financial institutions because it is a cooperative member-owned and member-operated service that encourages thrift and savings and provides a means of credit for its members.

How Does a Credit Union Work?

Members deposit their savings in their credit union. These savings provide a fund from which loans for almost any good purpose can be made to other members. Loans are made at low cost. After expenses are paid and legal reserves are set aside, the remaining income is paid to the members on their savings. Savings are called "shares" in a credit union and earnings are called "dividends." Safety is assured by close scrutiny by the elected directors. The Tennessee Department of Financial Institutions and the National Credit Union Administration have strict regulations and provide thorough and regular audits. Employees are bonded. A further safety factor is the fact that borrowers realize that they borrow from their friends and fellow workers.
